Purpose & Overview
Poi is a movement practice with roots in Māori culture, in which weighted balls on cords are swung in rhythmic, geometric patterns around the body. Today it is widely practised within the flow arts as a discipline that blends dexterity, rhythm, and full-body movement.
This guide is a coaching reference: it lays out a teaching progression from first principles through to intermediate concepts, and frames poi as a structured physical-conditioning tool — clarifying what it develops, how to scale it, and who it suits.

Equipment & Safety for Teaching
- Use sock poi or beanbag poi for all learning — never fire poi with beginners.
- Clear a space with room overhead and to the sides; remove fragile objects.
- Expect light self-taps early on; cue learners to keep elbows in and lean back slightly.
- A mirror or video playback accelerates self-correction.
- Warm up the shoulders and wrists before extended spinning blocks.
Teaching Progression
Stage 1 — Foundations
- Single-poi forward spin — head up the inside, over the top, down the outside. Each hand alone.
- Wall-plane circles — both poi parallel to the wall, same-time then split-time.
- Butterfly — both poi spin in front, mirroring each other.
- Stalls — reverse direction to pause the poi mid-air.
Stage 2 — The Forward Weave (3-beat)
The foundational two-poi pattern. Three positions: right side (beat 1), centre (beat 2), left side (beat 3); hands cross to reach the opposite sides.
- Start both poi spinning forward at your sides, in time.
- Bring the right hand across to the left side, spinning once (right arm over left).
- As it returns, bring the left hand across to the right side (left over right).
- Each poi spins as it crosses, then returns — a continuous figure-eight.
Coaching cues: keep hands close to the centreline (wide arms cause tangles); the poi heads should chase each other in a steady “1-2-3” rhythm, not strike together. Teach the path one-handed first, then add the second poi.
Stage 3 — Building Vocabulary
- Reverse weave — the weave spun backward; doubles the vocabulary.
- Weave behind the back — develops plane awareness.
- Five-beat weave — two extra crossings for a wider, faster pattern.
- Turns while weaving — 180° / 360° pivots without breaking the pattern.
Stage 4 — Trick Families
- Flowers (extensions) — arms extended, poi tracing petal shapes.
- Isolations — the poi head appears to hover in a fixed circle.
- Stall sequences & pendulums — chained reversals for control.
- Throws & catches — release and recatch; begin with vertical throws.
Key Concept: Spin vs. Antispin
This concept unlocks most intermediate material. It describes the relationship between the direction the hand/arm orbits and the direction the poi head spins.
- In-spin (same direction) — the poi head rotates the same way the hand orbits. Natural; the poi trails the hand. Creates clean circles.
- Antispin (opposite direction) — the poi head rotates opposite to the hand's orbit. Counterintuitive; creates petals — the gateway to flowers.
Teaching tip: have the learner spin a small in-spin circle, then keep the hand orbiting the same way while forcing the poi head to reverse. The outward “petal” they feel is antispin. Combining in-spin and antispin (a “hybrid”) produces the most striking patterns.
Seated Poi (Adaptive & Accessible)
Poi adapts well to a seated practice — suitable for wheelchair users, clients with lower-limb injuries or limited standing tolerance, older adults, and anyone rehabilitating or fatigued. Almost all upper-body patterns transfer directly, since the core spinning happens at the shoulders, arms, and wrists.
What Transfers Directly
- Forward & reverse spins — full range at the sides and in front.
- Butterfly — works well seated; keep the loops slightly higher.
- Weaves — the 3-beat weave is fully achievable; mind the lower arc near the knees.
- Flowers & isolations — excellent seated, as they rely on arm and hand control.
What Changes
- Lower planes — patterns that dip low may need raising or shortening.
- Turns — replaced by torso rotation, or a swivel/wheelchair pivot where mobility allows.
- Footwork & travelling — substitute with upper-body emphasis and plane transitions.
Conditioning value when seated
Removing the legs and balance demand concentrates the work in the upper body: shoulders, arms, forearms, grip, and the trunk used to stabilise and rotate. Seated poi is a strong option for targeted upper-body coordination and endurance, and for maintaining activity during lower-limb recovery.
Poi as a Swimming Warm-Up
Poi maps unusually well onto a swimmer's dryland warm-up. The patterns drive the shoulder through full circumduction, train scapular rhythm, and add thoracic rotation and cross-body coordination — the same structures freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly rely on. Done lightly, it primes the nervous system and warms the shoulder girdle without fatiguing it.
Why It Suits Swimmers
- Shoulder circumduction — spinning follows the same arc as the freestyle and backstroke recovery.
- Scapular rhythm — the weave and butterfly coordinate both shoulder blades.
- Thoracic rotation — extension and flower work open up trunk rotation for long-axis strokes.
- Activation, not fatigue — light tempo raises blood flow while keeping shoulders fresh.
- Bilateral balance — training both hands supports symmetrical stroke development.

Coaching Notes
- Keep tempo light — the goal is to prime, not pre-fatigue the shoulders.
- Spin each pattern in both directions to balance left and right.
- Pair with usual band and mobility work; poi complements rather than replaces it.
- Poolside-friendly: needs only a small space and a pair of sock poi.
Open-Water Variation — Distance & Cold Entries
Open-water swimming adds demands the pool warm-up doesn't fully cover: longer continuous shoulder loading for distance, neck and thoracic rotation for sighting, and — in cooler conditions — the need to keep moving and raise the heart rate right up to the water's edge.
- Longer sustained spinning — extend spins and the weave to build and hold shoulder warmth.
- Reach & rotate — emphasise extension and flower work to open thoracic rotation for sighting.
- Brisk finish — pick up the tempo before a cold-water entry.
- Keep moving — in cold conditions, continue light spinning right up to entry.
Open-water sequence (~12 min): sustained spins each hand (3 min) → continuous forward & reverse weave (4 min) → reach-and-rotate antispin (3 min) → brisk butterfly to finish (2 min). Spin both directions; scale tempo to the water temperature.
Sample Session Structure (45 min)
- Warm-up — shoulder/wrist mobility, single-poi spins each hand (8 min).
- Skill block — current target pattern, broken down slowly (15 min).
- Flow block — link known patterns at tempo for continuous movement (10 min).
- Challenge — introduce one new element: a turn, stall, or petal (8 min).
- Cool-down — gentle spinning, shoulder stretches, review (4 min).
