Print a feeding plan for this level: swimmers plan each feed on paper and work out their fuel and fluid lap by lap.
- Pool feeding drill: put a cup or bottle on the deck. Swimmers swim 100 m, grab, drink and go, aiming for under 5 seconds on the wall. A partner times it.
- Feed stick practice: the coach holds a cup on a pole at the pool edge. Swimmers take it on the move without stopping.
Coach notes Coaches only
- The model: fuel and fluid drain every lap (fluid drains faster in hot water). Below 30 the swimmer slows a little; at 0 they slow a lot. Every feed costs a few seconds, so feeding too often also loses time.
- The skill: plan feeds before the race, take the right feed (gel = fuel, water = fluid, sports drink = both), and feed fast. The grab and drink mini-game rewards a clean, quick feed.
- Surprises: Level 4 has a feed pontoon that closes on the day; swimmers who planned a buffer cope best. Level 5 has pack surges at some stations: feeding there costs extra time because you lose the pack.
- Stars: compared with the best plan fed perfectly. 3 stars = within a few seconds of the best plan fed cleanly; 2 stars = within 25 seconds. Feeding at every station is slower than the best plan.
- The best plan shows in the answer panel under the game.
