- Target splits: give each swimmer a target 50 split (e.g. 40 s). Swim 4 × 50 on the pace clock; they call their split before looking. How close can they get?
- Blind 100: swim 100 m at "race pace" without looking at the clock; compare 50 splits. Even within 1 second is excellent.
- Descend set: 4 × 50 descend 1–4 (each one faster). Check that every repeat is actually faster.
Coach notes Coaches only
- The model: 5 effort levels, each a fixed speed. The green pace light shows where the target pace would be (hidden on higher levels, like swimming without a pace clock). Harder efforts use energy faster; when energy runs low you slow down.
- Scoring: Levels 1–4 compare each 25 m split with the target. 3 stars = within 0.6 s per 25 on average, 2 stars = within 1.3 s. Level 5 (race) compares the finish time with the best possible even-paced swim.
- Teaching point: even pacing is fastest when energy is limited. Going out too fast costs more at the end than it gains at the start.
