Analogue version
- Speed = stroke rate × distance per stroke. Swim 4 × 25 at different rates: count strokes (distance per stroke) and time each one. Which gives the best speed?
- Stroke count challenge: swim 25 m with as few strokes as possible, then hold that count while getting faster.
- Tempo trainer: if you have one, set different rates and compare times.
Coach notes Coaches only
- The model: speed = stroke rate (cycles/min) × distance per stroke (m/cycle) ÷ 60. Distance per stroke falls as the rate rises. Too slow a rate = long strokes but low speed; too fast = spinning your arms and slipping water.
- Energy: higher rates cost much more energy (Level 4). The best rate for a 200 is lower than for a 50.
- Limited tries: each level gives 5 swims. Stars use your best swim, so swimmers must plan experiments rather than guess.
- Stars: 3 stars = within 1.5% of the best possible, 2 stars = within 4%.
